A love at the end of the line, money, sex and a burst of energy balanced between pop, rock and funk .
Salmo, Fedez and a purple world. The peace made between the two is sealed by a divertissement and the transformation of a relationship. Which evolves from passion towards interest and purple sheets meant as 500 euro notes and kisses with no real meaning. With an overwhelming rhythm, a chorus to be sung immediately after the first listen and a guitar turn full of energy, Fedez and Salmo are back. Love them or hate them, as long as we talk about them. And they seem to be playing on this ambivalence, not caring too much about how pithy or relevant the criticism actually is. It almost seems like a game, this new single between pop and funk where the two balance their verses over a fast-paced, frenetic beat.
I TRY NOT TO THINK ABOUT THE DAY I GAVE YOU THE KEYS
I TRY NOT TO THINK ABOUT SEX, BUT YOU CHANGE MY PLANS
OH-OH
BUT WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE PURPLE SHEETS?
OH-OH, OH-OH, OH
IF YOU'RE SPENDING THEM YOURSELF
Yet another new way of presenting himself to the public for Fedez who, between podcasts, life on social media, his commitment to X-Factor and this new return to music, is still a generator of catchphrases that come in. Salmo, for his part, accepts the challenge. And he simply plays between punk, rap and pop without indulging too much in the possible labels that fans and detractors will want to give him. Besides, Salmo knows his stuff, and with his latest unplugged project he has created a small masterpiece: his EP Salmo Unplugged has 10 unplugged tracks and 10 exceptional music videos – also available on Amazon Music – recorded at the end of the summer on the beautiful Costa Smeralda in Sardinia.
MAMA, DON'T TELL ME NO
NAKED NOW, NAKED NOW
BETTER THAN US, CAN'T, COME NOW
IT TAKES A YEAR TO UNDERSTAND YOU, EH
MORE HEADACHES THAN CLOTHES FOR A WHILE
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU I DON'T KNOW, YOU SAY NO
THAT I WOULD DIE FOR YOU (AH)
As well as Fedez himself and Salmo, the song features a close-knit team of authors: Dargen D'Amico, Paolo Antonacci and Davide Simonetta, who also took care of the musical production, and tells a bit about the ups and downs of this love that seems to be drawing to a close.
IF IT GETS US DOWN, WHAT DOES IT GET US? (YEAH)
CERTAIN KISSES TASTE OF NOTHING (YEAH)
I'M LOOKING DESPERATELY
YOU IN THE LONGEST NIGHT EVER (HA, HA)
How to realise, then, how much is left? To realise how empty, sterile, non-passionate it all is. More than kisses, money, recriminations, excuses seem to count here. What remains, scraping beneath the appearance, is the emptiness of a relationship that exists only for the sound of money that binds the two.
I KNOW, WE ARE NEVER TOGETHER, I DON'T GIVE YOU RESPECT
YOU SAY: "STOP DRINKING, LOOK HOW YOU ARE"
ANOTHER EXCUSE OF THE MONTH, I PROMISED YOU
I'LL CALL YOU BACK SOON
AND THAT HALF MILLION THAT'S RAINING ON MY BED
I SWEAR, IT WON'T DO ANY MORE
I WANNA DO EVERYTHING TO YOU, HOW YOU GONNA DO IT NOW?
I WANT TO HAVE SEX OH-OH-OH
So that leaves carnality, having sex, screaming it all in your face or smothering it in another interested intercourse? Maybe. Salmo and Fedez have fun with it, creating sounds that some might recall Blink 182, to others probably Salmo's hardcore beginnings, to still others certain punk rock attempts of certain 2000s bands. But in the end, does it matter so much to crystallise everything into a criticism or a thumbs-up? Free expression, like the myriad digressions of love, perhaps have more meaning to be found in the so-is-it-if-you-seem. Which is still a form of bonding, of art, of free expression as it may be.
