The actress Jessica Chastain tells, for the first time, the backstage of her stay in Ukraine. At the beginning of August, she had met President Zelensky and visited hospitalized children.
"We cannot forget the innocent people affected by senseless acts of violence." In a short video posted on her social networks, actress Jessica Chastain recounts her visit to Ukraine in early August. She accompanies her video with a series of tweets to share her thoughts and explain her approach.
"I needed a few weeks to reflect on everything I saw during my trip to Kiev," reveals the actress. "[…] I will now start sharing with you what I saw." The video begins with a drive-by sequence, during which Jessica Chastain cites several poignant figures: "War crimes have resulted in the deaths of 6710 civilians, including 359 children; 8741 civilians, including 700 children, have been injured," she lists as her cab passes buildings destroyed by bombs.
"One of the life-changing experiences of this trip was my visit to the children's hospital: Ohmatdyt. [The children impressed me with their hope and strength," she recounts, with pictures to back it up. Several excerpts of the video show the actress with hospitalized children. She is seen interacting with their families and sharing drawings and other words of encouragement to the young patients.
The format adopted by Jessica Chastain suggests that this short video could be the first in a series of images revealing the behind-the-scenes of her visit and, in particular, her exchange with President Volodymyr Zelensky. During his stay, the Ukrainian president had welcomed his presence: "For us, such celebrity visits are extremely valuable. Thanks to them, the world will hear, know and understand even better the truth about what is happening in our country". The Oscar-winning actress followed Ben Stiller and Sean Penn.
