“House of the Dragon” actress Emily Carey opens up about sex scenes

The House of the Dragon star spoke to Newsweek about filming the sex scenes, her apprehensions and the invaluable help provided by the intimacy coordinators during the shoot.

The latest episode of House of the Dragon was released on Monday and the sex scenes in it are already causing a stir. One of the sequences shows King Viserys having sex with the young Queen Alicent Hightower. She clearly takes no pleasure in sharing the king's intimacy. In an interview with Newsweek, Emily Carey, who plays Lady Alicent, opened up about the sex scenes in the series. The House of the Dragon star uses the pronouns "she / they", so we'll use the French equivalent "iel".

Speaking to Newsweek, Emily Carey recalls that she was 17 when she first read Viserys' bath scene, in which Alicent helps the king wash himself. "It scared me, because at that point I hadn't met Paddy, I didn't know how nice he was and how easy he was going to make it. All I saw was […] a 47-year-old man and I was a bit worried about that."

The importance of intimacy coordinators

House of the Dragon being a spin-off of the behemoth Game of Thrones, Emily Carey was frightened by the scenes of sexual violence in the original series: "I've never seen Game of Thrones before, so during the pre-production period I watched it and from the very first episode there's a lot of violence against women. […] There's a lot of violent sex and it made me nervous. I was thinking, "Oh my God, what am I going to have to do about this show?

To counteract this anxiety, Emily Carey was able to rely on the mediation of an intimacy coordinator who was present during the filming of the series. The role of the intimacy coordinators is to work through the sex and physical intimacy scenes with the actors who are to perform them, so that their movements are choreographed to feel comfortable and the filming is done in a safe environment. In rehearsals and on set, she was a big help and it was a lot easier than I thought it would be," the young star of the show tells Newsweek. […] It was like an outlet to be able to talk to her about everything, without avoiding any topics, without feeling uncomfortable."
