Actress Hilary Duff has now openly admitted in an interview that she suffered from an eating disorder as a teenager.
The actress became famous as a child through her roles in "Casper meets Wendy" (1998) and her Disney Channel series "Lizzie McGuire". With a reboot of this hit series set to air on Disney+ next year, all fans can't help but reminisce about the main character Lizzie McGuire. The 35-year-old actress now revealed in an interview with Women's Health Australia magazine that she struggled with an eating disorder at the age of 17. "Because of my career path, I couldn't help but think, 'I'm in front of the camera and actresses are skinny.' It was horrible," she recounted. She also admitted to chasing a Hollywood ideal at the time: "I was totally obsessed with everything I put in my mouth. I was way too skinny," she revealed, "Not pretty. And my body wasn't healthy – I often had cramps in my hands because I wasn't getting the nutrition I needed. This constant pressure to want something different from what I had? I regret it because I don't think I was happy then."
Here's how the actress learned to love her body
Today, as a mother of three, Hilary prides herself on her healthy lifestyle as she balances a relationship, children and her acting career. In fact, she now pays attention to what's called macro distribution in her diet, which calculates an individual amount of carbohydrates, protein and fat. "With the macros, it's cool because I don't have to cut out anything I love. It's just about making sure my body is getting the right amount of protein, fat and carbs – and then I can pick and choose what that is," says Hilary Duff. "I value my health and do activities that make me feel strong rather than just improving the appearance of my body. I spend time with people who make me feel good and who have similar views on health and body image, and I get enough sleep and eat a balanced diet."
