George Clooney told of his ‘disastrous’ marriage proposal to Amal

In the movies, he is an impeccable man, the kind who never makes a mistake. In reality, however, even George Clooney collects a few blunders here and there. Like the rest of us. Even at very important moments, such as when he proposed to Amal eight years ago, as he confessed in a recent interview on The Drew Barrymore Show.

The meeting between George and Amal? At the house on Lake Como

This is not the first time George Clooney has spoken about the moment he decided to propose to his fiancée Amal Alamuddin, a Lebanese lawyer, jurist and academic with British citizenship, specialising in international law and human rights.

But in an interview a few days ago on The Drew Barrymore Show, the actor decided to reveal new details. Before revealing what happened, the star told of his first meeting with the woman who became his wife in 2014. 'She came to my house in Lake Como. The funny thing is that my agent Bryan Lourd, he called me. And he told me, 'I'm coming to Como with a friend. You'll end up getting married'".

The actor – now at the cinema with the comedy Ticket to Paradise together with Julia Roberts – did not seem, however, so convinced that it could happen: 'I told him he was an idiot. And that it wasn't going to happen'.

Then, the (mind-blowing) meeting with Amal. "We talked all night. Then I started writing letters to her, by hand. We still do it today. And we leave them on our pillow,' he confessed.

George Clooney and the marriage proposal to Amal: 'A disaster'

During an interview with Drew Barrymore, George Clooney called his marriage proposal to Amal (crowned Time's Woman of the Year in March) 'a disaster'. But how come?

'I had calculated everything. Everything. I had organised a playlist and planned to give her the ring during the song Why Shouldn't I. It's a beautiful song. I put the ring in a little drawer behind her and cooked. She thinks we were only going out for six months…'.

Once the song started, during dinner, the fateful moment came. "The song starts while we're having dinner. So I say to her, 'I think there's a lighter in the drawer. Will you get it? So we light the candle again…". She opens the drawer, sees this ring and makes a contrite face. She says, 'There's a ring in here. As if someone had forgotten a ring years before in there."

"I really want to marry you but I'm still on my knees and I might break a hip."

Through it all George Clooney stood motionless on his knees in front of her. "The playlist meanwhile was going on and I asked her if she'd like to marry me… She didn't say yes until a terrible song ended, Goody Goody which, yes, I had put on the playlist, but which I wanted to start later, to dance to. I certainly didn't put it in because it came at this special moment…" she recounted amid laughter from the audience.

"So I told her, 'Look, I really want to marry you. But at the same time I'm not so young anymore and I'm still on my knees… And I might break a hip." So her 'yes' came,' confessed Clooney, who is now the father of twins, Elijah and Alexander Clooney.

The two recently celebrated eight years of marriage. They were married on 29 September 2014 in Venice and it was Walter Veltroni who declared them husband and wife.
