Stefanie Giesinger shows the coolest version of the side pony with her “Hepburn Bangs”

Stefanie Giesinger shows the coolest version of the side pony with her "Hepburn Bangs".

Bangs and side partings are officially back in style. The latest trend is a combination of both and a real comeback, as it was inspired by a movie icon. The Hepburn fringe, already seen on Bella Hadid, Katie Holmes and now Stefanie Giesinger, is a side parted fringe with micro bangs reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn's classic hairstyle.

Variation of the side-swept pony: this is what makes the "Hepburn bangs" so special

"This look is definitely a classic nod to Hollywood icon Audrey Hepburn, coming with the nostalgia of a '90s supermodel," explains Amy Abramite, creative director and stylist at Chicago's Maxine Salon. Several supermodels of the era – including Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, Kate Moss and Claudia Schiffer – also wore side-parted micro-bangs at the height of their careers. "It's a revival of the supermodels from the '90s," she says.

The look seems to borrow heavily from Hepburn's iconic bangs in films like Breakfast at Tiffany's and Roman Holiday, as well as the 1954 Academy Awards (where Hepburn won the Best Actress Oscar). No wonder the big stars love this look so much: Hepburn bangs are among the chicest side-parted hairstyles in the history of hair.

"Audrey Hepburn was a hair icon in her time and far beyond, and I'm thrilled that the new generation is inspired by her work and looks," adds Kacey Welch, celebrity hairstylist and founder of the Kacey Welch Method. "I think a lot of women have always wanted bangs and to be inspired by an icon like this is the best way to do it," Welch says. She also says that adding or changing the pony is one of the quickest and easiest ways to change the look without actually changing much.

Here's why "hepburn bangs" are now back in style

What's influencing the trend now, aside from historical figures known for their glam? "It's TikTok," says Welch, "TikTok has had a massive impact on the speed at which different styles and trends manifest themselves in the cultural zeitgeist. With more than 32 billion views, #hairtok features some of the most incredible transition videos that make viewers feel like they're getting instant results, inspiring more experimental hair." Plus, post-pandemic culture inspires everyone to try more adventurous styles, normalizing aesthetic experimentation on and off the runway – like in the office or at school.

Stefanie Giesinger: Here she shows off her side bangs

Stefanie Giesinger showcased her "Hepburn bangs" in her Instagram stories. We're pretty sure that the bangs were just glued on as part of a photoshoot – but we still love to be inspired by her look.

Other celebrities have obviously taken note of the trend as well: Bella Hadid, Kylie Jenner and Katie Holmes recently debuted their Hepburn bangs, and Halle Berry, Cardi B and Emma Watson have worn the look on various red carpets.

If you want to try the Hepburn bangs but are already done with the 2010s hairstyle, you don't have to worry: This hairstyle is very different from the super layered look that was trendy back then. "The bangs of the [late] 2000s and early 2010s were more layered than Hepburn's," Welch says, "Those are two very different styles and effects."

Hepburn's bangs are also much lighter, Abramite adds, "Hepburn's bangs have a more airy look. In the 2000s and 2010s, bangs were thicker, longer and tighter for a blunt look," Abramite explains.

"Hepburn Bangs": here's how to recreate this variation of the side-swept pony.

To achieve the Hepburn look, Abramite advises telling the stylist that you want a choppy fringe in a half-moon shape, or "mini choppy bangs." It's also always wise to bring a photo, Welch adds, noting that you should be prepared for recuts every month. "Bangs are high maintenance and require a certain level of commitment," she says. "They need to be recut every four to six weeks."

And the styling? Hepburn bangs are moderately high-maintenance because they need to be blow-dried immediately after showering. "Bangs need to be blow-dried from wet to dry immediately after showering," says Welch, who clarifies that they should be blow-dried flat, and only after using a heat protectant.
