Tom Cruise could be the first civilian to go into space in his next film

A real trip into space? For his next feature film, Tom Cruise could be the first civilian in the world to go on a spacewalk outside the International Space Station. It's a crazy project that Universal Pictures is determined to make happen.

No more special effects, Tom Cruise is really leaving Earth. For his next action film set in space, the actor could become the "first civilian to go on a spacewalk" outside the International Space Station. Donna Langley, head of Universal Pictures Studios, told the BBC of the big first. The film, directed by Doug Liman, is expected to cost $200 million.

Rocket trip for the film crew

"Tom Cruise is taking us into space. He's taking the whole world into space, that's our idea," enthuses Donna Langley. The producer says she has "a big project in development" around the actor's performance. The logistics involve the film crew taking a rocket trip to Thomas Pesquet's former home. However, Donna Langley points out that "the majority of the film takes place on Earth". Only when it comes to saving the world does the main character have to go to the stars. She describes Tom Cruise's role as "a down-on-his-luck guy who suddenly becomes the one person who could save the Earth".

Doug Liman has previously directed the 60-year-old actor, for his 2014 film Edge of Tomorrow and 2017 film American Made. For now, the production has not revealed details of the script for this upcoming feature film. But the teams are already in contact with NASA and SpaceX. No Hollywood film has yet been shot in space. For this feat, Tom Cruise is expected to receive a fee of between 30 and 60 million dollars, which would also cover his role as producer.
