Shakira on separation from Gerard Piqué: ‘The darkest hour of my life’

Interviewed by Elle, the singer recounts the pain of the end of her love affair: '"here were days when I had to pick up my pieces from the floor".

'The darkest hour of my life': she doesn't mince words

Shakira to describe her split from Gerard Piqué. After ten years of love and two children, the two announced their goodbye a few months ago. Then came the rumours of an alleged infidelity on his part, until the footballer came out of the closet with a new flame. Thus ended one of the most romantic stories of recent times that seemed destined to last forever.

Shakira talks about the break-up with Piqué

When they announced the end of their romance, the Colombian singer and the footballer asked for privacy and respect at this time, especially for the sake of their children. But, given their notoriety, rumours and indiscretions quickly circulated about them.

And, partly because of this, Shakira is struggling to overcome what, in an interview with Elle, she calls the most difficult moment of her life. "I've been silent and just trying to process everything. It's hard to talk about it, especially because I'm still going through it, because I'm in the public eye and because our separation is not like a regular separation," she said.

The music star does not reveal in detail what led to the separation. He simply recounts his pain. Explaining that it is a difficult situation also and especially for her children.

The paparazzi follow us

'I have paparazzi camped outside, in front of my house, 24/7. And there is nowhere I can hide from them with my children, except in the house,'  Shakira explained. Child custody and protection, after all, is a common problem for all couples who decide to separate.

In her case, then, everything is amplified by the fame of the two parents. Her children, Milan and Sasha, are only 9 and 7 years old. "We can't take a walk in the park like a normal family or go for ice cream or do any activity without the paparazzi following us. So it's difficult. And I tried to hide the situation in front of my children."

And again: 'I try to do that and protect them, because that's my main mission in life. But then they hear things at school from their friends or come across some nasty, unpleasant news online about them,' she added.

Pointing out that personal grief at the end of a great love is thus added to the concern about how to protect their children from news that could hurt them.

Child custody

After the official announcement of the split, the Spanish press published several reports about an alleged custody battle between Shakira and Piqué.

"Regardless of how things ended or how Gerard Pique and I feel about each other as ex-partners, he is the father of my children. We have a job to do for these two incredible boys, and I have faith that we will figure out what is best for their future, their dreams in life and what is a fair solution for all involved. And I hope and appreciate if we are given the space to do that privately,' the singer pointed out.

Piqué's new flirtation? Private facts

On the rumours and indiscretions of infidelities and new loves of the now former partner, Shakira did not want to say anything.

'I think those details are somehow too private to share, at least right now: everything is so raw and new. All I can say is that I put everything I had into this relationship and into my family'. A no comment aimed, probably, at safeguarding the children once again.

Saved by music

In the darkest moment of her life, Shakira found strength and courage in music. After a five-year hiatus, in fact, the star is about to return with a new album. And the timing couldn't be more appropriate.

Because 'in such a dark time, music brought light,' she said. "There were days when I had to pick up my pieces from the floor. And the only way to do it, to really do it, was through music. It helps me process my emotions and make sense of them. And it helps me heal. I think music is the best medicine, along with the love of my family and my children".
