Hayden Panettiere: The actress speaks candidly about the heartbreaking decision to give up custody of her daughter

Hayen Panettiere talks about giving up custody of her daughter with ex-boxer Wladimir Klitschko and how she gave up custody of her child with a heavy heart in the latest episode of "Red Table Talk" with Jada Pinkett Smith.

Hayden Panettiere now speaks openly about her problems with postnatal depression, alcohol and medication addiction. Now she shares how these circumstances led her to give up custody of her daughter Kaya.

Hayden Panettiere gave up custody of her daughter Kaya

On the new episode of "Red Table Talk," host Jada Pinkett Smith asked "Nashville" actress Hayden Panettiere what the public misunderstood about her: "The idea that I'm a person who would just throw my child away, give my child away," Panettiere replied in a clip. In 2017, she announced that she was undergoing treatment for postpartum depression; the following year, her daughter Kaya moved in with her father, boxer Wladimir Klitschko, in Ukraine. Klitschko and Panettiere had separated the same year.

"People's comments or the things they assumed about the situation with my daughter were just so…. heartbreaking," the 33-year-old actress continued. "There was a magazine cover that said something like 'Why Hayden decided to give up her daughter.' I just thought, that's so misrepresented. People were like, 'How dare you, you're a terrible mother, I could never do that to my child.' So it was hard and it took me a long time to talk about it."

Not wanting to upset the person who has "control" over Kaya, Hayden Panettiere says she is only now commenting on custody over her daughter.  By "the person" is likely to mean ex-boxer Klitschko.

In another clip from the episode, Panettiere talks about what she had hoped to gain from giving full custody to her ex-husband Wladimir Klitschko: "If [Klitschko] had come to me and said, 'I think based on your current situation and your fights, it would be good for her to be here with me for a while.' I probably would have understood that, thought that was okay, and then I would have said, 'Okay, that makes sense, I understand that, I'll come visit,' and so on," she recalls.

The actual transfer of full custody to Vladimir Kitschko is etched in Hayden Panettiere's memory as follows: "Signing those papers was the worst, the most heartbreaking thing I've ever had to do in my life," the actress says. Apparently, there were also plans to bring mother and daughter back together after Hayden Panettiere's recovery, "I wanted to work on myself, I wanted to get better, and if I got better, then things could change and she could come to me and I could spend my time with her."  However, she concludes with a sad inventory, "But that didn't happen."
