What is Greg Oden Net Worth in 2023?

Gregory Wayne "Greg" Oden Jr. (Buffalo, January 22, 1988) is an American former basketball player with a $16 million net worth. Oden is best known for playing for the Portland Trail Blazers and the Miami Heat and having a challenging course plagued by numerous injuries.

Greg Oden career

High school and college

In the 2006-07 NCAA season he played for the Ohio State Buckeyes finishing the year with 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. He grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana, playing basketball during his 7th grade at Sarah Scott Junior high school, but moved to Indianapolis for 8th grade and attended Lawrence North high school, where he led the team to three straight state titles and 45 consecutive wins under coach Jack Reefer.

Oden was named Parade Magazine High School Player of the Year 2005, or one of the 2005 best players in high school (along with Monta Ellis) and 2005 Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year, becoming the first junior besides LeBron James to be named such.

Greg Oden in NBA

On June 28, 2007, she was the first overall pick of the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers, but missed the entire 2007-08 season due to microfracture surgery on the cartilage in her right knee.

Although he was the first overall pick in the 2007 draft, Oden was considered a rookie for the 2008-09 season having never taken the court in the previous one. Oden made his NBA debut against the Los Angeles Lakers on October 28, 2008 but left the game after playing thirteen minutes due to a foot injury. He returned to the court after missing two weeks, on November 12, and on this occasion scored his first points in the first quarter against the Miami Heat. On January 19, 2009, Oden signed his career-high with 24 points and 15 rebounds in the 102-85 win against the Milwaukee Bucks. On Feb. 12, 2009, in the game against the Golden State Warriors, he suffered another knee injury by bumping into opponent Corey Maggette and had to miss three weeks. He closed his first NBA season with 8.9 points, 7 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game average.

Greg starts his second season well, showing improvement offensively and confirming himself as a good stopper and rebounder. He played his best game on Nov. 23, 2009, against the Chicago Bulls: he put up 24 points with 7 of 8 shooting, 10 of 12 on free throws, 12 rebounds and 2 stoppages. On Dec. 5, however, while he was holding averages of 11.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.3 stoppages per game, bad luck struck again: in the game against the Houston Rockets Oden landed badly after a jump shot, breaking the patella in his left knee. The severity of the injury is such that he ends his season early.

On November 17, 2010, now almost healed from the patella injury, he announced that he would have to undergo surgery again: after feeling pain in his left knee, an MRI revealed cartilage damage. Oden will then undergo the same microfracture surgery he had three years earlier on his right knee: again, unfortunately, he will have to miss the entire season. Considering even this last stop, Oden, whom the Blazers had selected as No. 1 in the hope of having found a new Shaquille O'Neal-like dominant center, played 82 games in four years, which is the equivalent of one full NBA season. On March 15, 2012, Portland decided to terminate his contract.

In May 2012 he announced his intention to skip the entire 2012-13 season to focus on full recovery from his injuries. On August 7, 2013 Oden signs a one-year contract (with a 2nd year option) with the Miami Heat.

In August 2015, he signed a $1.2 million one-year contract with the Jiangsu Dragons, a Chinese league team. After a season spent in China, he announced his official retirement from playing basketball on October 28, 2016.

Greg Oden recounts problems with alcohol addiction

Greg Oden's competitive parabola, as dazzling as it was brief, has left obvious marks not only in recent NBA history. The most obvious negative aftermath, unfortunately, involved the former Ohio State University prodigy himself. Oden reviewed his turbulent early-career history in a two-part interview granted to The Next Chapter podcast. It is an unfiltered chat that gives the listener a portrait of the first overall pick at the 2007 NBA Draft in all its complexity.

Greg Oden's frailties: ups and downs of his NBA career.

Moments of weakness, related to vicissitudes on and off the court, have dotted Oden's life. Problems with alcohol and drugs have greatly affected him. Here are some passages from his account of addiction:

"There were two different circumstances. The first was when I was in Portland and I realized I had to get drunk. I was taking two Vicodin, two Percocet, Advil or Tylenol, two Benadryl and I had to seek alcohol to sleep four hours a night: it lasted a good six months. At the time I was suffering from bulimia, I was in my third or fourth NBA season, when the operations started to add up one to the other. […]

The second time was after the season in Miami: I was arrested for domestic violence, I didn't recognize myself as a person anymore, I went to rehab and was on probation. After staying clean for six months, I realized I could stop. It doesn't mean I didn't drink from there on, but I learned a few things: I don't like liquor at all, hagovers after a drink were terrible, I only drink wine and an occasional beer. Now I don't seek excess, I'm not the drinker of my college days, the one who downs everything you put in front of him. I don't have to anesthetize anything now. Yes, I still have to deal with injuries but I'm not trying to anesthetize my body or my thoughts. Back in the day I used to drink for that reason, to mute the outside noise, from social to expectations about myself: In the past there were very rapid rises and many lows, addiction, loneliness, depression. Now I'm trying to be happy for my daughter's sake, I want to be a better example."

Oden now starts over as an assistant at Butler, in the collegiate world that has given him so much and demanded as much from him. Turning the page, to a new chapter, is the imperative.

NBA Story: The broken dream of Greg Oden, the giant with fragile knees

"With the first pick in 2007 NBA draft, the Portland Trail Blazers select: Greg Oden, from Ohio State." Hearing your name called by the commissioner (in 2007 it was David Stern) is the dream of every kid who was born and raised playing basketball, let alone if you are chosen with the No. 1 pick, the highest pick. And going by Oden's college stats, picking the 6-foot-3 center was not as crazy as it would later turn out to be. In the 2006-07 NCAA season, he finished the year with 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds per game and dragged along with Mike Conley (the Grizzlies' current point guard) the Buckeyes to the Final Four finals against the Florida Gators of Al Horford, Joakim Noah, Mareese Speights and Corey Brewer. Ohio comes out defeated but Greg puts himself in the spotlight with yet another absurd 25-point, 12-rebound performance. Expectations on him are very high considering also the awards he won in high school; he was named Parade Magazine High School Player of the Year 2005, or one of the best players of 2005 in high school and 2005 Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year. To many he is "the new Shaq" and Steve Kerr calls him : "Once in a decade player ".  He then makes himself eligible for the 2007 draft and the Trail Blazers see in him the future of the franchise and prefer him to a certain Kevin Durant, proving once again their bad luck/inability to make the right move (in the 1984 draft they chose Sam Bowie with the second pick and not Michael jordan who was taken by Chicago soon after).

Oden prepares to make his debut, but a medical checkup highlights a microfracture in the cartilage of his right knee and forces him to undergo difficult surgery just weeks before the start of the Regular Season, postponing his Rookie season until 2008. A real ordeal begins. Recovering from the injury, he made his NBA debut against Kobe Bryant's Los Angeles Lakers on October 28, 2008 but left the game after playing thirteen minutes due to a foot problem. He returns to the court after missing two weeks and on this occasion gets his first points in the first quarter against the Miami Heat.

He ends his first season with 8.9 points, 7 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game average. The following year, where he began to show improvement and good things on the court, bad luck came his way again: he landed badly after a jump shot, breaking the kneecap in his left knee. The severity of the injury is such that he ends his season early. In 2010 he is forced to undergo reoperation for another microfracture in his right knee, and will again miss the entire season. In four years he plays 82 games, which is the equivalent of one regular season.  The Trail Blazers' medical staff comes under fire, the injuries are too frequent and not treated properly, and the whole team suffers, first losing Brandon Roy, and then Joel Przybilla. In March 2012, management decides to rebuild and convinced that Oden would never again be able to return to the levels expressed in 2009, they terminate his contract. Greg thus decided to take a year off to try to regain the right physical condition, and tried to return for the umpteenth time in 2014, in Miami. These are his words upon arrival in Florida, "I know it's going to be worse and worse every time Kevin Durant is on the court. It definitely hurts but my body can't do what my mind wants it to do. I'm glad to be back and I'm glad I signed for Miami."

During the season he maintains good numbers and the Heat make it all the way to the NBA finals even though they have to surrender to a San Antonio Spurs in a state of grace (they will win the series in 5 games). Oden's contract expires but he doesn't give up, doesn't quit. He participates in Dallas Mavericks and Charlotte Hornets workouts, but an offer comes from China: the Jiangsu Dragons will be his new team. He collects an average of 13 points in 25 games while playing few minutes. Stricken by yet another injury, on October 28, 2016 at the age of 28 he announces his retirement from playing basketball. Life very often knocks you down ,but you have to have the strength to get back up. Oden managed to get back up for the umpteenth time: on April 12, 2016, he returned to his university, Ohio State, to earn his degree to become a full-time coach. His playing career was short and disappointing, but he is about to begin a new coaching career. Good luck, Greg!
