Jane Austen, JK Rowling, William Shakespeare, Mary Shelley… A study initiated by Amazon among 2000 British people has given the ranking of the best writers of British literature.
In first place, the famous 19th century writer, Jane Austen, and her romantic novels from another era. A total of 44% of British people voted for the author of Pride and Prejudice, which has been made into a film several times, including a 2005 feature film with Keira Knightley. The British author, who took up writing at the age of 11, published her first novel anonymously in 1811, entitled Sense And Sensibility. Her success has become all the more important in the 21st century, where readers identify with stories of drama and love. Second place goes to JK Rowling, author of the bestselling Harry Potter saga, with over 500 million books sold worldwide.
William Shakespeare only comes fourth, preceded by Roald Dahl, whose success with young audiences is evident in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964) and Matilda (1988). Next came the dystopian writer George Orwell and JRR Tolkien, for the 1400 pages of The Lord of the Rings, published in 1954. The British have also given voice to a number of important women: Charlotte and Emily Brontë, Virginia Woolf and Mary Shelley, who revolutionised Victorian literature in 1818 by imagining Frankenstein's immensely lonely creature.
