“James Bond”: the casting challenges to replace Daniel Craig

The producers of the legendary "James Bond" saga are actively looking for the actor who will succeed Daniel Craig. They are already warning that donning the costume of cinema's most famous spy is a long-term commitment.

Next month, James Bond turns 60. The next interpreter of cinema's most famous spy is eagerly awaited, as he will have the difficult task of keeping the legendary saga alive. So far, the identity of the actor who will take over from Daniel Craig has not yet been revealed. For the simple reason that he hasn't been cast yet. Idris Elba? Regé-Jean Page ? Jacob Elrodi? At the end of August, Variety magazine met with the saga's producer duo in the hope of getting a clearer picture. Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson set out their conditions: "When we cast Bond, it's a 10, 12-year commitment. […] Not everyone wants to do that. It was hard enough to get [Daniel Craig to do it]."

"A lot of people think, 'Oh yeah, it would be fun to do one of these movies' […] Well, it doesn't work like that […] it's a big commitment. It's not just about showing up for a few months of shooting," insists Barbara Broccoli. Apart from the artistic interest, the producer does not deny the financial stakes involved in choosing the next hero: "It's a big investment for us too to release a new Bond film".

A "reinvention" of the character

This investment is all the more important as the producers have announced a "reinvention of the character" for the next films. This renewal is at the heart of the casting search: "When people ask me: 'So, who are you going to choose?', I remind them that you don't just choose an actor for a film," explains Barbara Broccoli. "It's about reinvention. You ask yourself, 'Where are we going to take the character? What do we want to do with it?" And, once we've defined that, we ask who is the right person to embody that particular reinvention."

On Wednesday, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson were honoured in Hollywood at the traditional handprint ceremony outside the Chinese Theater. Interviewed by AFP about the future of James Bond, the producers gave a tiny tidbit of information about the plot: "There are certain immutable elements to this spy saga, […] the main character of James Bond is the most important element of the films and we believe he is incorruptible, he is in the service of the queen and now the king and the country."
