"My father worked hard all his life, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders," said Hugh Jackman, who lost his father during the filming of The Son.
Hugh Jackman opened up in an interview with Variety about how he dealt with his grief after the death of his father, Christopher Jackman. He died a year ago, after a 12-year battle with Alzheimer's disease, in a slow and painful decline.
In the interview, the 54-year-old Australian actor said he drew on his father's strength and dedication to work to continue filming The Son. Hugh Jackman was on set when he was told of his father Christopher's death last September.
"My father never missed a day of work. I felt his presence on set. I knew that if he could talk to me, he would say, 'You have to go to work! What are these excuses? Go!" In The Son, Hugh Jackman plays a workaholic father alongside Laura Dern who fights tooth and nail to take care of his family.
Raised by his father
"Shooting the film in the midst of grief helped me get my emotions out. I saw my father in every scene. He worked hard all his life, taking care of five children and carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. I felt that he was finally completely free. It made me feel better," the actor commented.
Hugh Jackman's father raised his children completely alone, as his partner Grace McNeil left the family when the Hollywood actor was only eight years old. Today, mother and son have a loving relationship again, but his father has always been Hugh Jackman's ultimate reference.
