George R.R. Martin, the author of “Game Of Thrones”, claims ten seasons from HBO

After the eight seasons of Game Of Thrones, the brand new series of the universe, House Of The Dragon, has just been released. George R.R. Martin, the author of the successful saga, is asking HBO for at least ten seasons.

Winter is coming and the seasons are multiplying. On the occasion of the release of House of the Dragon, the new Game Of Thrones series, this August 21, 2022, the author of the saga George R.R. Martin discussed the future of his baby with the Wall Street Journal.

If the original series was a phenomenal success worldwide, generated a real community of fans and revealed many young actors, it still disappointed. Indeed, its finale, after eight breathtaking seasons that were followed by viewers, was absolutely not up to the mark. The audience left the world of Westeros with a bitter aftertaste.

At the time, the series had detached itself rather quickly from the books and the writers had therefore followed a script not mastered by George R.R. Martin. "I wasn't able to contribute to the last few seasons of Game Of Thrones. Well, except for the fact that I created the universe, the story and all the characters," he says ironically. This time the author has decided to take matters into his own hands and confides that he is much more involved in the creation of House Of The Dragon. "In my opinion, the story requires at least ten seasons, maybe twelve or thirteen," he says.

An aborted spinoff

The author also mentioned the attempt to create a spinoff to the original series, with Naomi Watts in the lead role. He explains that five teams of writers came to visit him in his home in Santa Fe (New Mexico, United States) to present him each their project and their vision. "Emotionally, it was a pretty strange experience," Martin says.

In the end, the project was aborted. A pilot episode with a budget approaching $30 million was produced by HBO but never saw the light of day. The author admits that he had reservations about the project, because the story took place "during a time period only briefly described" in his books.
