What is Pansexual? Meaning explained

Is it possible to be non-straight, non-gay, and non-bi? Sexologists think yes, and introduce the concept of pansexuality – a new sexual orientation of the 21st century. The phenomenon has already been covered in The Daily Telegraph, The New York Times. According to Google Trends, queries on the topic of pansexuality are becoming more popular in search engines. There are pansexuals even in Hollywood. But who are they?

The prefix pan- comes from Greek and means "all" or "every". But the idea of pansexuality is certainly not just about "loving everything that moves."

What Pansexual menas?

Pansexual is an individual who can be attracted to women, men, transgender people, intersex people (people who have not decided on their gender). At the same time, we are not talking about sexual “omnivorousness” and licentiousness.

Gender doesn't matter when choosing a partner. Bisexuals are attracted to both men and women, while pansexuals are “gender blind” in relation to both their partner and their own gender.

Pansexuality suggests that you need to look for a mate for yourself based solely on the personal qualities of a person, common ideals and emotions received from communicating with him.

The term originated in the mid-1990s but was not popular. Pansexuality as a phenomenon has been actively discussed since 2010. According to sexologist Nikki Goldstein, the reason is that today's young people think more about their sexuality and think about its nuances much more carefully than previous generations.

Celebrities are already in

Pansexuals are often unable to describe their feelings and thoughts about gender relationships. It doesn't matter – a lot has already been formulated not only by sexologists, but also by celebrities. Mostly from the generation of 20-year-olds and even younger, which confirms the theory of Nikki Goldstein.

Divergent star Shailene Woodley, 23, is a prime example of pansexuality. However, not all of her fans immediately understood such a subtlety: when in 2014 the actress said that she “falls in love with people because of what they are, and not because of their gender,” many thought that the girl had come out confessing to being bisexual. She had to clarify her position later.

Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson, 22, admitted in an interview with Out Magazine: “I'm 100 percent straight right now. But how do you know? Maybe in a year I will meet a guy and understand that I like him".

Rapper Angel Hayes, who dated model Island Baldwin (daughter of actors Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger), also shares similar thoughts:

“Love has no boundaries. If someone can make me feel, laugh… So I can be with him. I don't care if it's a hermaphrodite."

Pansexuality: convenient concept?

Isn't pansexuality a convenient excuse for an hour for those who simply do not want to directly and honestly declare that they prefer representatives of their own sex sexually?

It is known that being a representative of a homosexual orientation is difficult, even if you are a Hollywood celestial. No one will blame, but, for example, they will not offer the main role in a romantic melodrama. Can a gay be a lyrical hero and an object of women's desires? It is for this reason, according to rumors, that homosexual actor Matt Bomer did not get the lead role in Fifty Shades of Grey.

Openly gay Rupert Everett, in turn, has repeatedly stated that coming out ruined his career, and advised young actors to keep quiet about their sex preferences if in the film business they rely not on “eat served”, but on leading roles.

Pansexuality, of course, is extraordinarily convenient: not gay, not straight, just a modern person with broad views. No need for coming-outs, but no need for lies either.

The Pansbians club

Mere mortals also feel that a new sexual orientation is close to them. A recent study published in The New York Times claims that more and more young people around the world are identifying as "mostly heterosexual."

Judging by the number of thematic communities on the Web, pansexuality is by no means the lot of stars. For example, the motto of the “hobby club” Pan Pride is “Sex is not genitals.”

Twitter has a Pansexuality FTW group and even a Pansbians account for "pansbians".

“Communities about pansexuality have allowed me to understand more about my relationship with my girlfriend, who was previously a man,” says 24-year-old Kristen Ritchie, one of the followers of the latest thematic account.

…Perhaps the words of Angel Hayes, who sees her ideal relationship something like this, are best expressed by the complex feelings of pansexuals: “I'm not homo, not bi, not hetero. It doesn't bother me at all. At the end of the day, I just want to be around someone who is on the same wavelength as me."
