Christine McVie, singer-songwriter of the rock band Fleetwood Mac, died on Wednesday 30 November at the age of 79.
Keyboardist, singer and songwriter of the 1970s rock band Fleetwood Mac, Christine McVie passed away "peacefully" on Wednesday 30 November at the age of 79, after a short illness. The artist was in hospital surrounded by her family, reports the Guardian. "I didn't even know she was ill… until late Saturday night," the band's current singer Steve Nicks, a close friend of the deceased, said on social media. "I wanted to be in London, but they told us to wait," she lamented.
The British-American rock band, founded in London in 1967, has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. Dreams, Go Your Own Way and Everywhere were among the songs that propelled Fleetwood Mac into the early 1970s. "She was the best musician you could have in your band and the best friend you could have in your life," the band wrote on Twitter. She "left us earthlings to listen with bated breath to the sounds of this 'songbird' […]. A part of my heart is gone today," drummer Mick Fleetwood said.
Christine Perfect
Born in 1943 in the village of Bouth in England's Lake District, Christine McVie was Christine Perfect when she joined the blues band Chicken Shack in 1967 as a pianist and singer. A year later she married bassist John McVie before joining Fleetwood Mac in 1971. At the same time, she recorded her first solo album, Christine Perfect. In the band she helped write some of the songs, such as Little Lies. In 1998 she left the band before finally appearing on stage again in 2013 with Fleetwood Mac at the O2 Arena in London. In 2014, she made her return to the band in time for the On with the Show tour.
