Emma Heming on the illness of husband Bruce Willis: “Grief is love.”

"My pain can be crippling but I am learning to live with it." The actor has been affected by aphasia, a speech disorder that impacts cognitive abilities.

Last March 30, Bruce Willis' family members announced in an Instagram post that the 67-year-old actor will have to retire from acting following a diagnosis of aphasia.

It is a speech disorder that undermines the ability to express oneself verbally, comprehend, write and read. Now his wife, 44-year-old model Emma Heming, has revealed on Instagram how he is experiencing these difficult months.

Emma Heming's confession: "My pain can be paralyzing."

For those who suffer from aphasia, there is no cure-all therapy. Thus, Bruce Willis's choice to give up filmmaking was forced. His wife Emma Heming decided to expose herself on her Instagram profile about it. She wanted to tell how she is experiencing these moments, showing herself while gardening. But also while she is engaged in a work-out session or playing with daughters Mabel and Evelyn.

"This has been the summer of self-discovery: finding new hobbies, getting out of my comfort zone and staying as active as possible. My pain can be crippling but I am learning to live with it. As my stepdaughter Scout LaRue Willis (daughter of the actor and Demi Moore, ed.) told me, pain is the deepest and purest form of love," she wrote on Instagram.

Shock at the time of the announcement about Bruce Willis' health condition

When Emma Heming had decided to go public about her husband's health condition in late March, the news had rightly bounced in newspapers around the world. "To Bruce's extraordinary supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has had some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is affecting his cognitive abilities. As a result, and with much reflection, Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him," she had written.

Beyond that, he had recounted. "This is a really challenging time for our family and we really appreciate your continued love, compassion and support. We are going through this as a strong family unit and wanted to involve his fans because we know how much he means to you." He had finally decided to take up a mantra that Willis is particularly attached to. "As Bruce always says, 'Enjoy life.' And together we plan to do just that."
