Model Bella Hadid, whose father is Palestinian, believes her support for Palestine has cost her some professional opportunities.
Personal support, with professional implications. Bella Hadid has always shown her support for Palestine, where her father was born. In an interview for the Rep podcast, the model said his outspokenness in favor of Palestine has cost him career opportunities and even connections. "I've had so many companies stop working with me," she said. I have friends who completely let me down. Despite what she describes as feeling "anxious" about saying or doing "the right thing", Bella Hadid believes she has all the personal experience and knowledge necessary to stand up for her beliefs. “I know my family enough, I know my own story enough. And that should be enough,” she said in the podcast.
The model has not let up on her plea as tensions between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants continue to escalate. In a June Instagram post, Bella Hadid wrote, “Every day I wish I could go back in time, to when I was a kid, so I can start fighting for Palestine earlier. For my family, for my elders, for our history and for the people of Palestine who still live, now, through this treacherous, exhausting and painful occupation."
After participating in a pro-Palestinian march in New York in 2021 and posting on Instagram about the march, Bella Hadid was lambasted by Israel's official Twitter account, which called her a "supporter of the jet of Jews at Sea”.
She, along with her sister Gigi Hadid and singer Dua Lipa, were also the targets of a full-page ad in the New York Times that called their pro-Palestinian advocacy "anti-Semitism." Bella Hadid concluded: “When I talk about Palestine, I am labeled as something that I am not. But I can talk about the same thing happening there, happening elsewhere in the world, and that's honorable. So what's the difference?"
